The course covers a range of biological and molecular science areas that underpin modern medicine; the programme is delivered in collaboration with local hospital laboratories; students make several visits to these labs during their course and also receive lectures from laboratory staff in the modules delivered at the University; the multidisciplinary approach allows students to investigate normal life processes and study pathological changes that occur in human disease; the course also provide students with a sound theoretical and practical foundation in a range of laboratory sciences that are used to aid the diagnosis of, or investigate, human diseases; the final year project is linked to a hospital or approved medical laboratories; the aim of the course is to produce highly-trained biomedical scientists with flexible career opportunities, and individuals who make valuable contributions to medical knowledge and the development of future diagnostic techniques; areas of study include: pathology and physiology; human anatomy; medical physiology; haematology and transfusion science; cellular pathology and cytology; medical immunology; medical microbiology; clinical biochemistry.
