Semester 1: Core 20-credit module: advanced software development; plus 2 options; semester 2: core 20-credit module: advanced database techniques; plus 2 options; the project module serves as an initial exploration of the chosen area; students produce a technical report containing the background research and initial design of their project area; students then receive feedback on this from the supervisor and a 2nd assessor before embarking on the dissertation in the 3rd semester, where the design is developed and realised in a systematic, professional manner; plus a project which accounts for a further 60 credits in the assessment. Advanced software development; plus options: information engineering; networks and protocols; software project management; computer graphics; digital image processing; advanced database techniques; formal methods; human computer interaction (design and development); internet security and protocols; plus a dissertation.

Good Honours degree (2:2 or above) or an equivalent overseas qualification, in an area relevant to their proposed programme of study and from an approved degree awarding body; lesser academic qualifications but have substantial (5 years) relevant work experience considered; candidates applying to the course with non-standard qualifications are judged on an individual basis using the University's APEL procedures; 6.0 for IELTS; or 550 for TOEFL (or 250 for the computer-based test) or above.

This course provides students who already possess a thorough grounding in the fundamental principles of computer science with the knowledge of leading-edge principles and methods for computer science, to specialize in some of the more current directions in the field, including formal methods, advanced software development, advanced database techniques, human computer interaction or internet security and protocols; the programme of study culminates in a dissertation, enabling students to bring their advanced studies together in a significant piece of work.
