Year 1: Provides a broad foundation to Earth sciences and assumes no prior knowledge of geology; the emphasis is on key principles and on developing practical skills such as petrology and map interpretation; these skills and principles are reinforced through fieldwork. Year 2: extends and deepens knowledge of key areas in geology - earth structure, rock-forming processes, deformation and chemical processes; these are complemented by applied topics such as the geology of mineral and hydrocarbon resources and the application of geographical information systems; there is also an overseas field trip; in the summer of year 2, a research project involves independent study on a chosen topic. Year 3: a choice of modules in year 3 allows specialisation in, and advanced study of, major topics such as planetary geology, oceanography, evolution, geohazard assessment, hydrogeology and resource exploration; the course is designed to closely link an understanding of earth systems to topical issues and scenarios; a compulsory module on research and career skills enhances graduates' potential in professional science-based careers.

This course explores the Earth and its evolution through deep time as a global-scale system in a planetary context; students develop an understanding of the place of geology in our environment and communities and its role in cross-disciplinary topics such as oceanography, the assessment of natural hazards, climate change and biodiversity.
