Entrants normally required to have a BSc(Hons) Biomedical Sciences or similar subject area; applicants must be HPC registrant biomedical scientists and employed by a collaborating NHS pathology service laboratory.

The course is designed for HPC-registered biomedical scientists; there are credit-rated modules in the professional disciplines of medical microbiology, histopathology, clinical chemistry or haematology and transfusion science; these are combined with modules in biomedical laboratory management and applied molecular biology and a laboratory-based research project to form a coherent and specialist discipline-centred part-time route for pathology service employees holding appropriate entry qualifications; there is a significant element of work-related learning, with discipline-specific subjects; students expand their knowledge and skills in diagnostic laboratory medicine, learn to apply these to clinical diagnosis, laboratory management and research, and develop as reflective practitioners.
