The applied therapeutics modules have been developed by senior clinical pharmacists working in the NHS; modules provide a competency-based approach to improving the delivery of pharmaceutical care to specific patient groups; as a result considerable emphasis is placed on the practitioner's ability to apply knowledge to practice by performing a variety of clinical skills; the material supplied is designed to facilitate the acquisition of therapeutic knowledge, but the most important aspect of this learning process is the application of this knowledge in the workplace, so that specific skills can be practised; the modules are targeted at a range of pharmacy practitioners but may additionally be suitable for pharmacy technicians or other health care practitioners with an interest in therapeutics (for example, nurse practitioners and junior doctors); all training is delivered in the workplace and does not require external attendance by students (except for the assessment day); the modules require pharmacists to undertake a range of practice activities which are aimed at improving service provision; the modules can be selected to suit the service needs as well as the learning needs of the practitioner and can be taught at a time and pace convenient to the designated tutor and trainee; students can also attend a learning support programme to introduce them to the assessment process.

Normally, graduate registered pharmacist in the UK working in appropriate primary or secondary care clinical areas are eligible to register for assessment.

This course represents a unique collaboration between academia and the National Health Service (NHS) to provide a competency-based programme aimed at practicing pharmacists; the production and delivery of the learning material is managed by the London, Eastern and South East Clinical Pharmacy Service whilst the university's School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences is concerned with designing and organising the assessments associated with the course.
