In linguistics research, our current work in second language acquisition investigates the knowledge used by advanced learners of french in addressing grammatical problems, particularly the article system and the past tense system; in culture and literature research, cultural memory focuses on erinnerungskultur in post-unification Berlin in relation to german national identity, in particular the memory of the GDR; our work on language and culture in France and the Maghreb focuses on media, popular culture and migration; research in language teaching and language teacher education concentrates on pedagogic beliefs and their effect on pedagogic change.

Upper 2nd Class Honours degree or equivalent qualification in relevant area; or appropriate research or professional experience at postgraduate level; candidates with relevant Masters degree or recognised equivalent or substantial appropriate research leading to published work may be registered directly for PhD.
