The course gives students a thorough introduction to design fundamentals then shows them how to develop alternatives, and how to question, evaluate, re-evaluate, test and navigate their solutions; students make use of journals, sketchbooks and worksheets and get to think out loud on paper; participants are introduced to designers from the past, present and future; they learn how to draw anything and everything and become passionate about paper, colour and type; students discuss books, films, exhibitions, the internet, music and cake.

This course exposes students to lots of ways of working from experimental to controlled, quick to quicker, immediate to considered, hi-tech to lo-tech, big to small, delicate to robust, 2-dimensional to 3-dimensional; the course involves practical studio-based experience, developing a visual language through experimentation, mark-making and digital manipulation; it introduces students to composition, shape and visual dynamics and provides them with an understanding of the historical and contextual events that have shaped graphic design today.
