Level 2: Textile design 1: this module: develops a basic ability in conceptual, critical and analytical thinking in relation to textiles; introduces basic visual and contextual research methodologies for textiles; develops a visual vocabulary in relation to textiles; provides practical experience of a wide range of textile processes and materials; encourages transferable skills; textile design 2: this module: develops ability in conceptual, critical and analytical thinking and a basic contextual awareness in relation to textiles; develops the ability to broaden a visual vocabulary in relation to textiles; provides additional experience of a wide range of textile processes and materials; encourages transferable skills: verbal communication, independent learning and time management; computer-aided design (CAD): an introduction to computer-aided design, basic theory of computer-aided design and a broad appreciation of how computers are used in design; design history, theory and practice: historical and contemporary review. Level 3: textiles in context: this module: develops an understanding of the design process in relation to a chosen specialism: fashion fabrics, interior or gallery textiles; encourages risk taking and experimentation in design thinking and practice; overseas study trip; optional European or international student exchange; design history, theory and practice: design futures and professional practice. Level 4: textiles and practice: this module involves the planning and production of a portfolio of self-directed research and development, and applies and extends knowledge and skills; design history, theory and practice: design dissertation and research outcomes in history, theory and practice.

This is a multidisciplinary course offering students a range of textile design specialisms including print, weave, knit and mixed media; the course is open and flexible, enabling students to cross boundaries from 1 discipline to another and to direct their work towards a fashion, interior, craft or gallery outcome; throughout the course there is a strong emphasis on visual research and drawing for design and concept development; the course has a structured programme of projects that encourage students to become self-motivated and to generate a personal creative language; the course has links with industry and the profession through participation in live projects, national and international competitions; primarily, the course aims to provide an intellectual and creative stimulus and encourages critical debate concerning the nature of perception, aesthetics and the social and cultural context of textiles and textile design.
