Level 1: Students take the multidisciplinary level 1 module 'the changing world order'; they are encouraged to take the history level 1 option 'the making of the British Atlantic Empire'; plus 4 other modules. Level 2: International relations; plus 1 module from: the shaping of early America to 1877; the development of modern America from 1877; classic Hollywood cinema: an excessively obvious cinema; film noir: the dark side of the street; aesthetics and Kant; comparative politics; and 1 module from: contemporary challenges for Europe; the origin of the modern: power and the self in the 16th and 17th centuries; Romanticism and the Gothic aftermath; dynamic human worlds: society, culture, economy; early modern Europe 1400-1789; regime and resistance in Europe 1789-1945; Hume and recent European philosophy (problems of the self); comparative politics; plus 3 other modules. Level 3: The politics of transatlantic relations; and 1 module from: governing the USA; European Union politics; Scots on the move: a century of Scottish migration and emigration c.1830-1930; migration and ethnicity; population geography; mind: action, experience and attitude; contemporary politics in Ireland; contemporary politics in the UK; postmodern identities/postmodern histories: literature 1960-2000; plus 2 modules from the other Joint Honours subject. Level 4: 2 modules from: identities in contemporary Europe; conformism and revolt in European culture; vision in film, literature and culture; Britain and Ireland in the age of the American and French Revolutions (1); Britain and Ireland in the age of the American and French Revolutions (2); US foreign policy since 1945; the USA and international political economy since 1945; plus 2 modules from the other Joint Honours subject.

The Transatlantic Studies part of the degree programme focuses on a wide range of topics, including contemporary ones to do with soft and hard security issues and the future of international relations in the transatlantic relationship, as well as historical, geographic, economic and literary perspectives; aims to provide an understanding in a comparative context of the transatlanticism that embraces Europe and the Americas; students are encouraged to spend a semester or a year studying abroad in Europe or North America.
