Year 1: History of art 1. Years 2, 3, 4 and 5: Practical specialisation at University: history of art 1; Western art, particularly painting and sculpture from C1500 to the present day. History of art 2: main developments in the art and architecture of Europe and the Near East from late antiquity to c1500. History of art 3 and 4: students specialise in detailed courses.

Students spend half their time studying academic subjects in the University, and the other half working in the studios at Edinburgh College of Art; at the College: the 1st-year course at the College of Art introduces painting, sculpture, tapestry and printmaking; subsequently, students choose to specialise in 1 of those subjects; whatever the specialisation, great emphasis is placed on drawing.
