2.1 Honours degree or equivalent in a subject that includes some coverage of film studies; a good knowledge of English is required, but it is not necessary to possess a foreign language, since all instruction is in English and the films are subtitled.

This course is taught by staff with expertise in all key areas of film studies, with particular strengths in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Latin-American, post-colonial and diasporic cinemas; film philosophy; gender and film; queer cinema; and star studies; as well as questions of national and transnational cinema; (students are able to select an option module in US cinema from the Master's in English studies should they wish to do so); students with the appropriate language skills can study for 1 academic term in partner institutions in France, Italy and Spain; this course interfaces theory with practice; students are encouraged to participate in the activities of the centre for research into film studies, which runs fortnightly; students wanting to take the course via distance learning have access to the same range of modules as Exeter based students, but their contact with tutors and fellow students is largely mediated through WebCT (the University’s online teaching forum); students on the Master's access lecture notes, set reading and participate in online discussion forums; individual consultations for assessed essays and dissertation supervision also tend to take place online or via internet teleconferencing (such as skype).
