Students study: lighting design for live events including theatre, conferences and festivals; lighting control and special effects; programming of lighting consoles; moving light technology; pyrotechnics. Year 1 and 2: In the 1st 2 years students undertake modules covering the following subjects: lighting design: including lighting for television, theatre, architectural and environmental lighting; electrical principles and The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) 16th Edition Wiring Regulation; lighting principles; business and health and safety issues; flying and rigging design; lighting control and special effects. Year 3: in the final year students undertake advanced modules in lighting for film, television and theatre; the final year provides students with the opportunity to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, working together in a simulated industry environment.

This course provides students with a high level of technical skills and knowledge of lighting engineering and design; the course mixes science and engineering with the art of lighting, to offer students the ability to experience the exciting world of lighting; it enables students to be at the forefront of new technology for architectural, television and theatre lighting; graduates may also be qualified to the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) 16th Edition Wiring Regulations.
