Year 1: Development and learning; children, families, education and society; history, policy, welfare; safeguarding children and young people; youth justice and children and young people rights; practical skills for placement and entitlements. Year 2: researching education; inclusive education and cultural diversity; language and language development; placement working and children; option modules: children's literature in education; education and the media; safeguarding children/child protection; curriculum issues and ideologies; options for Early Years Professional Status (EYPS) status. Final year: dissertation; schooling, childhood and family support; health and well-being; current issues and major theories; option modules: education and popular culture; managing and leading in education; international and corporation education; ethics, power and practice; in the 3rd year the student has the opportunity to undertake a placement in a setting relevant to 1 of the main occupational areas concerned with children and young people; the work associated with this placement gives the student the opportunity to develop and reflect on a range of work-related skills.

This course is suitable for students who have an interest in working with children and young people, but have not yet decided which professional avenue they wish to choose; it provides an educational programme which prepares the student for a range of occupations and/or further professional training courses in education, early years work, youth work, learning support and other occupations related to children and young people; the course offers the opportunity to study core aspects of childhood and areas of underpinning knowledge essential for those planning to work with children and young people, such as safeguarding children and young people, working with families and ensuring children's health and well-being; a range of optional modules drawn from relevant parts of the School's undergraduate programme are also available.
