Students study cell biology, anatomy, physiology, nutrition, animal husbandry, genetics, animal behaviour, epidemiology and pharmacology in years 1 and 2, followed by infectious diseases, pathology, parasitology and public health in year 3, which also includes a research project module; the final year is lecture-free and the clinical course includes substantial amounts of practical small group teaching; students have a choice of elective subjects, which are studied in greater depth; 26 weeks of clinical extra-mural study are completed between years 3 and 5; students receive special training in communication skills; students may also undertake an intercalated degree and extend their programme.

Candidates must select only 4 programmes for veterinary science; the course enables students to acquire the professional skills, knowledge and experience necessary to qualify as a veterinary surgeon; the first 3 years of the programme are taught in Liverpool; subjects in these years are modularised and cover preclinical and preclinical subjects; clinical training in years 4 and 5 takes place at the Leahurst Campus.
