In the information society, the mass media is omnipresent. Communication Studies investigates its structures, functions, and effects in the capacity of an empirical social science. This means that it studies the mass media, journalists, their messages, and the recipients of these messages by means of the instruments of empirical social research. Content analysis, experiments, and interviews, for instance, are among these instruments.
