The course involves a considerable time spent in the laboratory gaining a detailed understanding of a wide range of techniques; course covers: The principles and practice of scientific dating; bio-archaeology and materials analysis; and the study of technological change; and includes an introduction to relevant basic science for those with a degree in archaeology.

Upper 2nd Class Honours degree in an appropriate branch of the natural sciences such as: Biochemistry; biology; chemistry; earth sciences; materials science; or physics; archaeology; or other appropriate subject or equivalent.

MSc comprises 2 terms of taught material and a 6-month research project; MSt comprises 2 terms of taught material, as for the MSc, and a 6-week practical project in an area covered by the taught course.
