Financial crises. Trade flows. Investment by international companies. Foreign aid. Cross-border pollution. All of these are examples of globalization at work, and as the world continues to become ever more interconnected, understanding how these forces affect nations and people becomes ever more urgent. The international political economy (IPE) major at GSPIA prepares students for a career dealing with these issues. Students develop an understanding of the politics and economics of global forces, and how countries and international institutions attempt to manage them. GSPIA has particular strengths in the areas of development and global finance, and there are ways for students to create courses of study that fit their interests. For example, IPE majors often take advantage of synergies with other majors, including those in development (such as Human Security) and Public and International Affairs (such as Energy and Environment).
