Year 1: Modules include: principles of earth structure; sedimentology; principles of palaeontology and earth history; mineralogy and petrology; fossils and evolution of life; geomorphology. Year 2: modules include: topics in geoscience; sedimentology, stratigraphy and palaeontology; geophysics; structural geology and regional geological analysis. 1-day field classes and 2 residential field courses. Year 3: options are designed to give students the maximum flexibility in course and career development; subjects include: geohazards and georesources; hydrogeology; petroleum geology; how volcanoes work; time in geoscience; metamorphic processes; sequence stratigaphy; evolution of global systems; independent project; personal and industrial skills training; residential field work.

Applied geologists use their understanding of Earth materials and processes for economic and social benefit; after gaining a strong foundation in geology, students learn techniques used on major engineering projects such as how to evaluate geological hazards, and to locate and extract Earth resources in an economic and environmentally sensitive way.
