year 1: Students are introduced to the fundamentals of linguistic analysis and of how to “do things” with language; they also learn the methods for carrying out language-based projects and how to properly report their findings. Year 2: students refine the knowledge acquired in year 1 and become familiar with the subtle links between language structure and meaning, and understand and appreciate how language is used and manipulated in different text types and styles. Year 3: has a focus on communication theory and practice, and the way in which language is used in professional contexts; students also research their own choice of topic for the dissertation.

Students gain a greater understanding of the English language and an insight into the ways it is used in a variety of contexts; they acquire sophisticated analytical skills as well as the ability to produce texts of different types and with different purposes; plus, if they are interested in becoming a teacher of English as foreign language, they can follow a special strand within the degree, leading to the award of the Trinity Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CertTESOL).

Расположение

Университет располагается в оживленной части города Портсмут, недалеко от набережной; рядом находится множество магазинов, пабов, баров и ресторанов. Портсмут связан с остальными крупными городами страны отличной сетью автомагистралей и железных дорог. Город находится всего в 90 минутах езды на поезде от Лондона, из него также легко добраться до аэропорта Хитроу, Гатвика и Саутгемптона. Портсмут - город с крупным паромным портом, поэтому из него легко доплыть до континента, в частности до Франции и Испании.
