This course allows students to develop their ability in and understanding of music in combination with learning about philosophical issues that have challenged thinkers for centuries; half of their modules are in Music and half in Philosophy.MusicIn the Music department a personal tutor works with the student over three years to help them make the most of their studies and encourage students to excel; lectures, seminars and group tutorials are reinforced by individual supervision or feedback; the Music part of the degree is assessed through projects, performances and coursework, giving students a chance to develop their skills and interests in an independent and creative manner; the performance module at level 1 is assessed by a short recital; the level 3 instrumental or vocal recital is given in public; while following a recital track students are given tuition on their principal instrument. PhilosophyThe programme offers a range of courses taught by researchers who are experts in their fields; students can develop their understanding of the key areas of philosophy such as ethics, philosophy of mind, theory of knowledge, political philosophy, metaphysics and logic through the course of their 3 years; there are also modules on major figures in the history of philosophy such as Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Hegel and others.
