The central emphasis of media studies as a subject is on integrated, interdisciplinary studies; students learn and apply a range of methods, e.g. textual analysis of films and television programmes, historical studies of media use, sociological studies of media impact, feminist studies of representation and theoretical studies of cultural change; the content of modules ranges widely across the field and may include such topics as Hollywood cinema, media representations of gender, the sociology of news, and the study of media audiences and institutions; a particularly important theme that criss-crosses the subject concerns the media as constructors of social reality not just windows on the world.
