Year 1: Students acquire a knowledge of relevant anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and optical principles; clinical content in this year involves an introduction to general eye examination techniques. Year 2: Covers a broad range of topics including advanced eye examination techniques; contact lens practice; human disease processes; the functioning of the visual system and visual impairment. Year 3: Clinical skills are further developed by the introduction of the investigation and treatment of patients with eye disease and abnormality of the binocular visual system; students also study the needs of patients with occupational and special visual requirements; experience of patient care.

Course provides both diagnosis and management of ocular problems, physical and pathological, and training in dealing with a range of physiological and environmental factors that may have an impact on ocular health; much of the clinical teaching is undertaken in the University Optometry Clinic, which contains a wide range of ophthalmic equipment for both teaching and research and is a public access primary care clinic; clinical experience is also provided in NHS hospitals; there are 6 modules of study in each year.
