Applicants must have received the academic degree regarded as their countries' first professional degree in law (equivalent to the U.S. juris doctor degree). Diplom spetsialista or bakalavra, kvalifikatsiya Yurist. For all those required to take the TOEFL exam, the minimum scores we look for are: Paper Based TOEFL (PBT): Writing: 60 Listening: 60 Reading: 60 TWE: 4 Internet-Based TOEFL (iBT): Writing: 24 Speaking: 22 Reading: 26 Listening: 26. The Graduate Committee will accept a score from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in lieu of a TOEFL score. The minimum score we look for on each section of the IELTS exam is 7.5.

Intellectual property law tries to balance society’s interest in having incentives to create intellectual property with the need to distribute that property optimally for social benefit. The ability of digital technologies to copy and exploit the advantages of unique intellectual achievements presents new challenges for intellectual property law, making it one of the fastest-growing legal specialties in the United States. Virginia's IP program, combining a broad array of courses, hands-on clinics and professors who are focused on the real-world applications of their scholarship, offers students a unique foundation for exploring these challenges.

At nearly 2,000 acres, the University of Virginia’s Grounds cover a large part of the City of Charlottesville. The Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport (CHO) is located approximately eight miles from the University. The Charlottesville Amtrak Station is located at 810 West Main Street, approximately two miles from the University.
