Part 1: This is the taught component of the course and includes practice, theory and research elements; it comprises a flexible modular framework where students are taught animation/film studies, timing for animation and scriptwriting, as well as essential software skills, Maya, life drawing and 3-dimensional stop motion; they gain relevant industrial practice through work placements or case studies; these sessions are complemented by master classes and mentoring from industry professionals and the annual animator in residence scheme; part 2: students make a 3-minute film, or equivalent, which is supported by a written critical paper; MFA: the award is based on supervised study; this work can be focused on significant professional experience gained through work placements or internships organised through the Skillset Screen Academy Wales; an extended animation production; or a research project that could lead to registration for an MPhil/PhD.

The course is designed to help students identify, develop and refine a progressive and critical engagement with animation in all it's forms; while developing the skills to help students realise their ideas, the course provides a bridge to the industry or to further academic study; above all this is a vocational course that emphasises the importance of maintaining an individualised creative and innovative approach to film making; students work towards the completion of a unique body of work that includes a professional show reel, portfolio and short film supported by a critical paper; the course enjoys industry recognition as part of the Skillset Screen Academy Wales, which provides access to master classes, mentoring, specialised equipment and bursaries.
