Depending upon the choice of combination, students study 1, a combination, or all of the following strands: Core Language Strand: these modules focus on the structure of the language and help students to use it with increasing accuracy and confidence; language modules are interactive with native speakers in a the supportive environment; attention is given to all language skills. Area Studies Strand: these modules focus on a deeper understanding of the culture of the chosen language; students are introduced to aspects of the history, society and politics of the country; students acquire a range of transferable skills that enable them to critically evaluate historical and literary sources. Applied Bilingual Language Skills Strand: these modules emphasise practical foreign language and communication skills in a variety of contexts; students are given a foundation in language transfer skills, such as translation and interpreting in and out of the foreign language; modules include exposure to a variety of registers, styles and specialist language areas.

Native and near-native speakers cannot study the Core Language Strand and, therefore, cannot major in their own languages; they can study either or both of the following strands as part of their overall degree structure: Area Studies Strand (taught in English) Applied Bilingual Language Skills Strand, such as translation and other transfer work into and out of English (taught in English and the foreign language).
