1st degree courses (1st or 2.1 in a related area; with a lower class of degree exceptionally if applicants can demonstrate their ability to meet the demands of the course) in: photography; fine art; art history; cultural and media studies or may have a variety of professional experience (i.e. are employed or self-employed in areas related to photography); there is normally be an interview; a portfolio of practical work is essential; evidence of written research skills (e.g. an undergraduate dissertation) may be requested; for those whose 1st language is not English an attainment of at least IELTS 6.5 or equivalent must be demonstrated; the University offers pre-sessional summer programmes for those who need to improve their English before starting the course.

Throughout the course students work on projects designed to develop and extend their practice and critical skills; critical theory modules contextualise the practice of photography and students develop their own personal areas of research interest (extending and often transforming their own visual practice); completing their study with a major body of visual work; a dissertation or a theory (practice) option.
