After the foundation course students take the 3 compulsory subjects of: business law and practice, property law and practice and civil and criminal litigation; thereafter they can then choose 3 electives (subject to availability) from: commercial law; commercial litigation; commercial property; corporate finance; e-commerce; employment; entertainment and media; family, housing; immigration; private acquisitions; personal injury and clinical negligence (students who take immigration law can seek exemption from level 1 of the legal service commission’s immigration and asylum accreditation scheme; (this being the only legal practice course (LPC) provider currently authorised to recommend its students to the legal skills course(LSC) for level 1 exemption in this way).

Applicants must hold a current Certificate of enrolment with the Law Society and a current Certificate for completion of the academic stage of training (the latter is usually available where students have graduated with a qualifying law degree; passed a Common Professional Examination or a Diploma in Law); the Law Society may accept other qualifications; whilst the University requires a minimum of a 2.2 Class Honours in a qualifying law degree or equivalent postgraduate qualification.

The full-time course begins with an intensive foundation course introducing core and pervasive areas in: professional conduct and client care; revenue; financial services and markets act; European Union law; solicitors’ accounts; business accounts and information technology; (also introducing the skills of: writing and drafting; advocacy; interviewing and advising and practical legal research.
