Geography Year 1: Introduces the nature and scope of modern human and physical geography; it investigates the evolution of the British landscape by considering the effects of geology, climate change and sociocultural changes together with rural development. Year 2: Allows students to examine sustainable development in all its forms; it introduces the study of lake and river ecosystems, considers geomorphology and soils, and how oceans and the atmosphere influence global weather and climate; it also examines natural hazards and their effects on the biosphere, geosphere, atmosphere and hydrosphere. Year 3: Considers strategic issues in environmental management; it examines cultural perceptions of the use of environmental resources and conflicts over planning and regeneration, and offers the option of investigating volcanic hazards or other aspects of the physical environment; students carry out an extended research project and further fieldwork practice. Religious Studies Year 1: Provides a general introduction to the study of religion; it focuses on Judaism, and on religions in Wolverhampton; it offers social, political and ideological perspectives of the Holocaust, and investigates the development of the bureaucratic and technological apparatus of extermination. Year 2: Focuses on Christianity, Hinduism and Sikhism; it examines religion and the professions, and investigates what we have inherited from the Enlightenment and its key thinkers; it also introduces a range of research methods that are used in religious studies. Year 3: Explores Buddhism; it considers the religious landscape of contemporary Britain, as well as the ideas and practices which are important for contemporary Muslim identity in Britain; it also examines new religious movements which have emerged in the UK in recent times.

Providing an understanding of natural environmental processes, as well as the ways in which humans have moulded and managed the form and function of different landscapes, the geography course prepares students to play an active part in shaping the world around them; students gain skills such as fieldwork, graphicacy, numeracy and specialist IT skills such as remote sensing and geographic information systems; from the multiculturalism debate to the international terrorism, religion continues to have a huge influence on human behaviour across the globe and understanding the role religion plays is a vital part of understanding society at a local, national and international level; the religious studies course introduces students to all the world’s major religions and some of the less well known ones; study areas include Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism, providing a solid grounding for further professional study.
