Year 1 takes the mathematical knowledge base to a new level and develops skills in algebra and calculus. It offers a solid grounding in introductory probability and statistical inference, such as hypothesis testing and basic statistical model building. A module in pure mathematics introduces you to the study of algebra and mathematical analysis and provides an insight into the workings of modern mathematics. Students will also explore the most useful basic techniques of OR. Year 2 takes a closer look at applied statistics. Students are taught how to conduct a survey and how experiments are designed and analysed. Students will look at recreational mathematics which will be useful for those wishing to enter the teaching profession. Students can undertake a work placement in the third year if they wish, or alternatively move straight to the final year. There will be an opportunity to explore multivariate statistics, cluster analysis, principle component analysis, factor analysis and multivariate analysis of variance. Students also investigate the role of mathematics as part of humankind's cultural development, and undertake a research project of their choice.
