All trainees from both courses spend a minimum of 18 weeks on school experience in at least two of the consortium’s schools; in phase 1 trainees spend 5 weeks in a paired placement in school; this enables trainees to learn and observe with each other, to plan together and to deliver lesson jointly and individually; in phase 2 trainees are placed in another consortium school for 6 weeks; in phase 3 trainees usually stay in the same school as in phase 2 for 7 weeks where they will be expected to meet the standards for qualified teacher status; by the end of phase 3 trainees will have assumed full responsibility for the teaching and managing their class, and will have had the opportunity to assess, level and record their children’s work.

An Honours degree at 2.2 and above or its equivalent; GCSE mathematics, English and science at Grade C or the equivalent;
equivalent qualifications may be accepted, subject to verification; a commitment to the teaching profession; an ability to discuss issues in education from an informed viewpoint; recent experience with primary aged or early years children in a school setting; opinions on the issues affecting inner city schools.

The course is delivered in a variety of ways and includes lectures; seminars; workshops; self-study and personal research; the course provides trainees with the theoretical and practical experience needed to meet the standards for qualified teacher status; the 5-11 taught course covers all subjects on the national curriculum for primary schools and pays particular attention to the core subject areas of English, mathematics, science and information communication technology; trainees are required to complete a certain number of written and practical assignments in these subjects the broader curriculum and professional values and practice; trainees are also required to pursue a specialist option which arises out of their own interests in education and this makes up the final assignment.
