Semester 1: Concept development (learning how to be self-reflective to ensure continuous development and lifelong learning which is essential in your development as a designer and communicator); experimental communication (examining the role of the visual communicator to hone skills in receiving information and imparting it to others); and create a design portfolio (stage 1), giving students the opportunity to generate ideas and innovative concepts to create a body of work that reflects their style; a minimum of 3 briefs are to be submitted per semester. Semester 2: Ideas and perspectives (examining visual culture through beliefs and values in today’s society); and create a design portfolio (stage 2); this module is a continuation of stage 1 and enables students to continue developing style and direction through live briefs; students demonstrate ability to integrate theory, practice and professional development through a minimum of 3 briefs during this semester; plus a major project.

Students are encouraged to focus on the creative development of concepts and throughout the year they work towards a portfolio of work that reflects their understanding of the creative process and demonstrates their ability to work within the confines of a design brief; students learn how to challenge current perspectives of communication and the means by which a message is delivered.
