TAILORED TO YOUR LEVEL

As part of our unique model of instruction there are 2 study levels and you will be enrolled into the appropriate level for your needs. All four language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) will be taught with a focus on useable, everyday language that you might expect to use when you visit, live, work or travel in China.

  1. Title: BRI and the future of diplomacy and global trade
    Professor Adam Cross, Head of International Relations


    Adam R. Cross is Professor of International Business and Inaugural Head of the Department of International Relations at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU). Before joining this new department in April 2018, Adam served for more than four years as Associate Dean for Learning and Teaching at the International Business School Suzhou (IBSS), XJTLU, during which time IBSS became the youngest business school in the world to receive accreditation by AACSB and EQUIS. Previously, Adam worked for 17 years at the Centre for International Business University of Leeds (CIBUL), UK.

    Synopsis: The BRI (or 'Belt and Road Initiative') is a massive geopolitical projected launched by the Chinese government to expand its area of influence by creating an extensive China-centric infrastructure. This Summer School webinar considers the reasons behind the initiative and some of the potential diplomatic and international business implications for the countries involved.
  2. Title: Doing business with China in a changing world
    Professor Roberto Dona, Associate Dean, International Business School Suzhou


    Roberto Donà, joined IBSS is Professor of Practice in Management. He is currently the Associate Dean for Professional Engagement and fhe Director of the Master in Management. Previously he has been a faculty member of SDA Bocconi School of Management and Bocconi University since 1990. He has been Visiting Scholar (1996) and Visiting Professor (1998) at Stern School of Business (New York University) and Visiting Professor, Fudan University School of Management, Fudan University. He has a strong international exposure having worked in Russia, Bulgaria, Argentina, USA and China. His fields of interested are Internationalization and Innovation Processes in Asia and in FDI in the region and in their managerial implications.

    Synopsis: The actual situation in bringing the world in a new reality. New normality or next normality are payoffs used by opinion makers to forecast the future. How this will impact business operations? Which could be the future trends? What the business opportunities? These are the key questions addressed by this summer school seminars focusing the answers in particular on new business creation.
  3. Title: China’s international trade and business
    Dr.Miguel Hidalgo Martinez, Lecturer, Department of China Studies

    Miguel obtained his PhD at University of Technology, Sydney, in Australia. He is a lecturer in Chinese regional development and international trade. His research areas are urban economy and economic geography.

    Synopsis: China is one of the main economies in the world. Its exports, national companies, domestic market and logistics are at the center of the world economy. Large-scale supply chains of multinational corporations located in Chinese cities feed all regional markets through interconnected first-class logistics networks; whereas Chinese companies are gradually becoming leaders in different industrial sectors through the implementation of innovation and creativity. The dynamic and rich business culture of China is a unique and challenging opportunity for international entrepreneurs. This talk will briefly explore the transformation of the Chinese economy towards becoming the center of the world economy.
  4. Title: Perception of Space and its Significance in Chinese Culture
    Professor Paweł Zygadło, Department of China Studies

    The experience of space is one of the fundamental categories shaping the human perception of his/her existence and the world around. As it is not happening in isolation, it remains in close relation with perceptions of values, behaviours and social structures. Consequently, unique perception and utilisation of space become an integral element of every culture. The lecture will revolve around a specific Chinese perception of space and its relationship with the perception of social structure and Chinese worldview in general. It will analyse the nature of the interplay between socio-ethical values and perception and utilisation of physical space in the Chinese context. It will also present some practical tools allowing for 'culturally sensitive' perception of space.

    Synopsis: Pawel’s research interests include Chinese philosophy, sociocultural psychology, and intercultural communication. His most recent research project, The Concept of Face in Contemporary Chinese Society: Theory and Practice, examines the adaptation and meaning of the notion of Face (lianmian) in 21st-century Chinese society.

Learn something new this summer. Spend two weeks learning Chinese language (Mandarin) online while also getting a flavor of Chinese culture and business.

The levels we teach include absolute beginner and elementary.

This is the course for you if you:

  • have never studied Chinese before and want a kick start into this fascinating and vital language
  • have already studied some Chinese (to elementary level) and want an effective refresher online course
  • want to seize the time and chance to study Chinese online regardless of where you are
  • want to get a taste of studying at XJTLU

COURSE DELIVERY

Our two-week summer school online course runs from 27 July to 7 August, 2020.

The course is made up of daily live, interactive online sessions, as well as self-study videos and materials.

Live sessions take place Monday to Friday, 3pm to 4:30pm (Beijing time). The self-study materials will be released 24 hours earlier so you can preview the learning content. The course is made up of 15 hours of live sessions, around 20 hours of self-study materials (recorded videos/ exercises/ quizzes, etc.), and 4 lectures on topics such as business and economy in China, Chinese culture or urbanization, etc.

There will be plenty of opportunity to practice the language you are learning with your classmates, and with your teachers. We also provide opportunities for students to speak with our native Chinese speaker teachers in our live online sessions, and get useful feedback immediately.

TEACHING MATERIALS AND STYLE

We create and adapt our own teaching materials to suit students’ needs and learning style. Our teaching style is communicative where the focus is on your use of the language in class, preparing you for real-life situations outside of class. You will be offered not only live lectures but also the access to lots of interactive self-study materials.
