There is a gradual introduction to the task of teaching through a carefully selected programme; 1st, a 2-week initial school-based placement, meant to ensure students have a good basic understanding of the work of the primary school; a serial attachment when students work alongside a class teacher gaining experience of working with individuals and small groups and teaching elements of whole class sessions; then students spend 5 weeks teaching independently but with support from a class teacher aimed to build knowledge and confidence in teaching and managing a whole class; students then move on to spending a short time working alongside teachers in an inner city school, enabling them to understand the opportunities and challenges offered by a culturally diverse context; finally students spend 8 weeks attached to a class gradually taking over the role of the class teacher.

A good Honours degree preferably with a class of 2.1 or above; however applications from mature students seeking a career change or students who offer additional teaching related qualifications/ experience or who have a strong background in areas such as music; physical education or information communication technology and have a degree class of 2:2 will be considered;candidates must have GCSE passes (or equivalent) in mathematics, English language and a science at grade C or above; A-levels in national curriculum subjects are an advantage; interview; candidates will also be required to take tests relating to basic literacy, science, information technology and numeracy knowledge.

This programme allows students to gain knowledge and experience of all the subjects taught in the primary school; students will start working with schools during the first term of the programme; regular contact allows students to make the connection between theory and practice, and allows practice to be informed by theory; students will have experience in a range of schools across their chosen age group including a period in an inner city school; this gives students the confidence and competence to teach in very different school contexts;the programme uses a wide range of learning and teaching approaches; lectures; workshops; seminars; discussions; independent learning tasks; school-based research;at various times students will be expected to work both independently and in a group; students are offered professional and personal support by a tutor especially assigned individually and work within a supportive student group.
