In years 1 and 2 students are assigned to a small group, typically of 2 to 3 frontline instruments plus rhythm section, which receives intensive weekly coaching on core repertoire; in years 3 and 4, students run their own small group, in which they have their own choice of repertoire and personnel, and are able to apply for mentoring and coaching as students see necessary for the band's development; senior small groups receive coaching from visiting artist in residence Dave Holland and other international guests.
