Year 1: Western art, particularly painting and sculpture from c1500 to the present day. Year 2: Main developments in the art and architecture of Europe and the Near East from late antiquity to c1500. Years 3 and 4: Royal iconography in Medieval Islamic arts; Gothic architecture in France, England and Scotland; mythological painting in Italy and Spain c1500-1650; Scottish painting 1843-1979; British and American art c1940-1970.

History of art involves the historical study of the most diverse kinds of visual art: paintings and posters, grand public decorations and private illuminated manuscripts, sculptures, photographs and prints; students are asked to think about how particular works were made, who they were made for and why; students also face questions about meaning and interpretation: how did people understand a work at the time it was made and how have interpretations of it changed over time?; this subject can also be studied within the degree programme MA (Hons) in Joint Honours.
