The SAT or the ACT is required. SAT Subject Tests are not required; applicants who do not take Subject Tests are not disadvantaged in the admissions process. We do not require the writing portion of the ACT. If English is not your native language—regardless of your citizenship—you must have an official report of your scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The university expects you, at a minimum, to have completed the following course work by high school graduation: Four years of english Four years of math, including Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. Students who complete Algebra II prior to their final year must complete the four-year mathematics requirement by taking a course or courses that utilize non-trivial algebra. Examples of courses meeting this requirement include Algebra II, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus and successor courses, Statistics, and College Algebra. The English major has been designed by the English department faculty with three purposes in mind: 1) to give students an overview of the history and variety of literature written in English; 2) to use the critical study of language and literature to help students think carefully and express themselves well; and 3) to introduce students to the debates about literature and culture that shape our intellectual lives and our national and global conversations. Our hope is that our graduates will enter the world with the sophistication, critical acumen, and sympathy born of wide reading and the skills needed to carry their convictions into action, no matter what line of work they pursue.
