The University of Dayton (UD) is an American private Roman Catholic national research university in Ohio's sixth-largest city, Dayton. Founded in 1850 by the Society of Mary, it is one of three Marianist universities in the nation and the largest private university in Ohio. The university's campus is located in the city's southern portion and spans 388 acres on both sides of the Great Miami River. UD is a member of the Association of Marianist Universities and the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities.
The campus is noted for the Immaculate Conception Chapel and the University of Dayton Arena. The University also operates in China's Suzhou Industrial Park, the University of Dayton China Institute.
Students at the University of Dayton can choose from more than 80 academic programs in arts and sciences, business administration, education and health sciences, engineering and law. In 1988 UD was the first in the country to offer an undergraduate degree program in human rights.
The university encourages its students to actively practice their faiths through liturgies, spiritual retreats and special programs such as PORCH (People of Respect, Compassion and Hope). Through the PORCH program students gather in small groups and meet once a week to pray.

UD has very high research potential and more than 150 patents have been assigned to the University of Dayton, including one for hotbags that Domino's Pizza uses to keep delivery pizzas hot. With the acceptance rate of about 60% UD is relatively difficult to get in.
The University's notable alumni include engineer David Bradley, Control-Alt-Delete keyboard command developer; architect Bruce Graham; Super Bowl-winning coaches Jon Gruden and Chuck Noll; first female Premier of New South Wales Kristina Keneally; and Joseph Hinrichs - Ford Motor Company executive vice-president.
The University of Dayton is tied for the 111th on the 2017 U.S. News & World Report's list of National Universities. Forbes America's Top Colleges 2016 ranking placed UD the 203rd.
The most popular majors by the number of registered students are speech communication and rhetoric marketing/marketing management, mechanical engineering, finance, psychology, accounting.
