Справка о вузе

The University of Delaware (UD) is the largest university in Delaware. Founded in 1743 as a small private academy, the University of Delaware has grown to become a significant state-assisted, privately governed establishment one that is designated as a Land, Sea and Space Grant institution by the US government.

With around 17,000 undergraduates and 5,000 graduate students, the university offers a wide range of programs through its seven colleges and links with over 70 research centres. It offers 147 bachelor degrees, 119 masters, 54 doctorates, 15 dual graduate programmes and three associate programmes.

The main campus is situated in Newark and much of its architecture is influenced by Georgian design. The other four campuses can be found across the state in Wilmington, Dover, Georgetown and Lewes.

Much to the benefit of its College of Earth, Ocean and Environment, the university has its own 146-foot vessel called the Hugh R. Sharp. Named after a previous trustee of the university who had a passion for marine studies, the research vessel is the most advanced in the US and can carry up to 20 scientists on coastal research cruises of up to 18 days.

Back on land, the university also has its own High Performance Figure Skating Centre where some of the best figure skaters in the world flock to train.

Due to the number of academic options, many students complete dual degrees as well as double majors and minors. UD students have access to work and internship opportunities, world-wide study abroad programs, research and service learning programs.

U.S. News & World Report ranked UD's undergraduate program tied for the 79th among "national universities" and tied for the 30th among public universities in its 2017 rankings.

Notable alumni of the University of Delaware include Vice President of the United States and former US Senator Joe Biden; the Second Lady of the United States Jill Biden; New Jersey Governor Chris Christie; campaign manager David Plouffe; Nobel Prize-winning microbiologist Daniel Nathans and organic chemist Richard F. Heck; and the current president of the Emory University James W. Wagner.

The main campus is in Newark, with satellite campuses in Dover, Wilmington, Lewes, and Georgetown.

Despite the fact that Newark is located roughly halfway between Philadelphia (72 km away) and Baltimore (89 km away) and is part of densely populated New Castle County, there is a large amount of public parkland surrounding the city.
