The University of Iowa's main campus, located in Iowa City, was originally designed by architect D. Elwood Cook. The campus is roughly bordered by Park Road and U.S. Highway 6 to the north and Dubuque and Gilbert Streets to the east. The Iowa River flows through the campus, dividing it into west and east sides.

The Iowa campus spans 1,700 acres centered along the banks of the Iowa River and includes the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, named one of "America’s Best Hospitals" for the 25th year in a row.

Four blocks from campus there is the Iowa City, a Midwestern metropolis that has been recognized among the nation’s best for its scenery, greenery and sustainable energy efforts. The campus is home to several museums, five residence halls, theater, hospital, daycare on campus for children of students, sports facilities and many others.

Campus life may pose a challenge to tobacco users, as Iowa is a smoke-free campus.

There are over 500 student organizations including groups focused on politics, sports, games, lifestyles, dance, song, and theater, and a variety of other activities. Close to 10 percent of students go Greek as members of the school's nearly 50 fraternities and sororities. Sports are another big focus of campus life.

Student organizations are responsible for the majority of the programs and events held on campus each year. Each organization offers students unique opportunities that will help them to stay connected to campus and to reach new achievements.

The University of Iowa is well known for its party and social scene. Much of the student night-life in Iowa City is centered on the pedestrian mall, which contains numerous restaurants, local shops/boutiques, and over thirty bars. Popular university events that draw both students and residents from the entire midwest are home football games. A related activity that many students are engaged in is tailgating, often beginning early in the morning before a game.

Students participate in a variety of student media organizations. For example, students edit and manage The Daily Iowan newspaper which is printed every Monday through Friday while classes are in session. An early editor of the DI was noted pollster George Gallup. Daily Iowan TV, KRUI Radio, Student Video Productions, Off Deadline magazine and Earthwords magazine are other examples of student-run media.

The University of Iowa has several great on-campus residence halls to choose from. They vary in size, from 1,000 rooms to 299, to fit each and every student’s needs. Living on campus is a great way for any student to make new friends and meet new people, as well as take advantage of a safe and affordable living space.

Freshmen do not have to live on campus but more than 90 percent choose to do so.

The collegiate experience is challenging — especially during the first year — and the residence halls are designed to make the basics of food and shelter as stress-free as possible, allowing residents to focus on classes, activities, friendships, and personal growth.

In terms of proximity to classrooms, the residence halls are hard to beat. Between location and the Cambus system, getting around campus from a residence hall is easy. Besides, University Dining does an excellent job of providing a wide range of food and meal options for our students.
